On the Boards

The addition of a garage and studio in this client's backyard provides extra space to be present with family and a new place to inspire their creativity.

In a response to the existing landscape, the organization of the two buildings shift out of plane with each other to guide you to the pool and backyard, while exposing the studio to accept more light. To ensure maximum wall surfaces, clerestory windows let in diffused light evenly throughout the interior and frees up wall space for art, entertainment, and privacy.

We implemented burnt wood cladding on the exteriors that mirrors the dark color of the house while adding a textural quality that indicates a utilitarian space. Large overhangs nod to midcentury design with the glulam structure expressed on the exterior and interior. The exposed ceilings complement the plywood clad interior, an enduring material that accepts the life happening around it. Within the studio, an office space, living space, and changing room are organized around a central fireplace that acts as the central hub for utilities - storage, a kitchen, and mechanical.

This project provides an extension of the existing exterior spaces - organizationally and visually. Using raw and natural materials further connects the buildings back to the surrounding nature. The same qualities of the outdoors are embedded into the design choices we made that develops a seamless interaction with the exterior spaces and the interior. These spaces are designed to be used, to exist as the infrastructure for a better life. Surfaces are designed to be lived in, to be touched, and in turn moves us and shapes how we live.
