After purchasing an outdated traditional townhouse at the base of a high-rise, our clients realized their home should reflect who they are and serve as a backdrop for how they want to live. The bland interiors, full of soffits and jutting out corners, needed to be reconfigured and infused with life. Together with our clients we transformed the project into a clean, modern living experience that matches their minimalist tastes.
We sculpted the interior with integrated millwork and wall realignment to provide an intuitive layout without any wall protrusions or awkward soffits. The first floor kitchen and living space use millwork and furniture to define programmatic functions while still allowing both to flow into each other. The design efficiently choreographs the existing conditions back to the essentials, stripping away all of the awkward and careless finishes.
The most mundane daily tasks are infused with thoughtfulness and intrigue, enhancing the life our clients choose to live.
The integration of custom millwork into the existing framework of the townhouse allows for selective texture and materiality to be celebrated against a crisp bright backdrop. The re-configured stair wraps around an exposed concrete shear wall that links the spaces to each other while adding texture to the project. White oak chevron flooring, full-height marble slabs, and exposed concrete structural walls introduce both warmth and raw character into the project's 4 floors with museum-quality detailing. The residence’s bathrooms include minimalist plumbing fixtures, curbless showers, and custom vanities. Each fixture and finish was chosen to elevate the experiences of everyday. The spatial sequencing as you walk through the project was tailored specifically to the clients. The master bedroom, bathroom, and closet approach is fully configured with the morning rituals of the clients, limiting disruption and adding efficiency to each of their schedules. The project ushers the clients through life with purpose. The power of architecture lies in the elements you can't see but will definitely feel.

With an updated mechanical system, the experience of walking through the project develops a sense of ease and comfort that is reinforced through its material palette. Not only has this home changed visually but experiencing the effect of seemingly invisible systems elevates this project to a higher level. As architects, we rely on the communication between all aspects of a project, between the visible and invisible, the hard and the soft, all of the threads that weave the tapestry of a project. To be truly functional, we design for your emotions and the way a space feels. Our design intervention at Soldier Field House transformed the generic, developer-driven house into an experience that communicates the lives of the clients.
