Perched above Lake Michigan, this residential retreat transforms the site’s challenges into opportunities for captivating design. The secluded 3.5-acre lot came with an existing building and accessory structure whose foundations were reused to navigate the strict setback requirements. From early form studies layered with code research, a composition of interwoven buildings emerged—spaces that balance function and beauty while elevating the client’s getaway experience.

The site itself shaped every design decision. Preserving the natural surroundings was paramount, so the architecture was carefully oriented to frame the landscape while minimizing its footprint by reusing the existing infrastructure. The design is organized into three distinct bars: sleeping quarters, gathering spaces, and amenities—each thoughtfully arranged to strengthen the relationship between interior and exterior.

Every space is crafted with intention. Gathering areas open directly to sweeping lake views, while private sleeping quarters are tucked at the rear for peace and seclusion. Amenity spaces anchor the experience with a dramatic infinity pool overlooking panoramic vistas of Lake Michigan. Sight lines and circulation weave these spaces together, creating a seamless dialogue between indoors and out. The result is a retreat where spaces flow into one another, offering moments of connection, privacy, and delight in equal measure.
